Information
Arunachal Pradesh
Right
at the top of north-eastern India, is Arunachal Pradesh, the `Land of the
Dawn-lit-Mountains.' The area is one of the most pristine in India, with a
dazzling array of flora and fauna, in a habitat that combines glacial
terrain, alpine meadows, and sub-tropical rain forests. More that 90 per
cent of the state is densely forested.
Arunachal Pradesh sits atop Assam,
with Bhutan to its' west, and Myanmar on the east. This is the first Indian
soil to greet the morning sun. Dawn first illuminates Arunachal's border
with China: a long border which stretches all the way from its east, over to
its northern boundaries and down to its north-western edge where it merges
with Tibet.
Arunachal Pradesh is the largest
state in the north-east region. Agriculture is the main occupation of the
people. The principal crop is rice, and other important crops include maize,
millets, wheat, pulses, potato, sugarcane and oilseeds.
History
of Arunachal
The recorded history of this state is available only from the 16th century
onwards, when the Ahom kings began to rule Assam. Since 1947, it was a part
of the North East Frontier Agency and was later made a Union Territory.
Arunachal Pradesh was made a full fledged state on 20th February, 1987.
The north-east is India's chief
tribal area, and the numerous tribes of Arunachal Pradesh make for a rich
and colourful study for any anthropologist. Over 50 distinct languages are
spoken! Arunachal's tribals bear many similarities to the hill tribes, who
live across an arc that stretches from the eastern end of the Himalayas
through Myanmar (Burma) and Thailand into Laos.
